In 2009 The Icarus Foundation, led by Dr. Rachel
Dodds, conducted a survey of Canada’s municipal DMO’s to determine their levels
of awareness and action with regard to climate change.
The results showed that DMO's are uniquely situated to provide climate change
education to the wider tourism industry. However, it is also clear that while climate change is considered an
important issue among Canada’s municipal DMO’s, the organizations have yet to
take significant action to mitigate their impacts either directly or through the education of their
client-members. It is clear that greater guidance is necessary to assist DMO’s, and the wider industry, develop
an appropriate plan of action.
A full summary of the results is available at www.theicarusfoundation.com in addition a discussion piece on the findings written by Anna Pollock. We look foward to feedback and comments on the report.
